A Calm, Six-Phase Guide for Planning an Open Education Project

Open education projects can feel beautifully possible and wildly overwhelming at the exact same time.


You may be redesigning a course, replacing an expensive textbook, building a new resource, applying for a grant, or trying to shape an open practice idea that still feels a little fuzzy. The challenge is rarely a lack of possibility. More often, it’s knowing what to do next and how to keep track of the many decisions involved.


The OER Project Planning Guide offers a calm, step-by-step way to move through that work.


The guide is organized into six phases:

  1. Frame Your Context

  2. Build Your Evidence Trail

  3. Clarify Permissions and Ethics

  4. Design the Implementation

  5. Design Participation and Co-Creation

  6. Plan Systems and Sustainability


Each phase includes a brief explanation, why it matters, what to include, and a practical checklist. The guide also includes a final reflection, a one-page project snapshot, and a master checklist you can use to see the whole project arc at once.  

You can move through the phases in order or begin wherever your project feels stuck. The goal is not to complete everything perfectly. The goal is to make the work more visible, manageable, and connected to the people it is meant to serve.
